October 17 - Hospitality

(Luke 6:31)

“Welcome in, you’re going to be treated as part of the family.” It’s a real gift to be able to make someone feel comfortable around us and safe in our care. Way back in the bible we are introduced to a Hostess named Jael, in this story she invited Sisera into her home and she told him she would protect him from the men chasing him. I probably don’t have to give the gory details, but she ended up betraying him. Now, I know you’re probably thinking how this story is going to portray hospitality? In my opinion Jael must have had a warm and caring way about her, for someone to let their guard down and feel vulnerable around her. I wonder if after all the celebrations were over, she felt like nobody would truly trust her friendship again. Romans 12:10 ISV tells us to Excel at showing respect for each other. When someone comes to us needing a friend how do we treat them? Do we pretend to care, acting as though our only thought is for their wellbeing, only to turn later and spread the juicy details of their vulnerability? Romans 12:9 says, your love must be without hypocrisy. Detest evil; cling to what is good. God wants our hospitality to be a service to the Lord (Romans 12:11) As we tend to the needs of others.
